Emotional Freedom Technique is often called 'tapping therapy' and has been described as 'acupuncture without the needles.' It is based on the belief that we can remove emotional disturbances by restoring balance to the body's energy system.
During an EFT session, a client can work towards clearing ‘blockages’ or ‘disruptions’ in their energy system, by tapping on particular points on their face and hands - these points correspond to specific meridians.
EFT is gentle and painless. It is quick to do, and you can safely use the techniques for yourself at home.
Emotional Freedom Technique can work on almost any issue, physical or emotional. It works on a physical level, by sending pulses of energy to rebalance the body's energy system, and on a cognitive level, by changing the way you think about your chosen issue. It encourages you to shed negative emotions or physical reactions, and can give you a much greater sense of control over your own thoughts and choices.
You will be asked to focus on your chosen issue while you gently tap on a sequence of meridian points on your face and hands. At the same time as tapping, you'll be asked to repeat out loud some affirmations which relate particularly to you - these affirmations will be ones you have decided on with your therapist.
By doing these things, you stimulate activity in specific areas of the brain, which has a positive effect on your mental processes. Usually, the negative feelings you have been experience begin to reduce during the session and it may be possible to resolve these completely. It's quite normal to feel a bit silly when you first start using EFT, but your therapist will tap along with you, and if you can have a laugh or a chuckle while you work on your chosen issue, so much the better!
