What is traditional acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is an holistic healthcare system that regards pain and illness, whether physical or mental, to be a sign that the body is out of balance. Because traditional acupuncture considers every bodily function to be connected and interdependent, it recognises the role emotions play in illness and disease. The overall aim of treatment is to restore the body's equilibrium.

Traditional acupuncturists are trained to use subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined over thousands of years. Focus is on the individual, not their illness, and all ‘symptoms’ are looked at in relation to each other. Because everyone is unique, two people with the same western diagnosis will each receive different acupuncture treatments.

The principle underlying acupuncture, is that illness and pain occur when the body's qi, or vital energy, cannot flow freely. The body's energy meridians may become obstructed. This can be for any number of reasons, such as emotional or physical stress, poor nutrition, infection, or injury. Ultra-fine, sterile needles, are inserted into specific acupuncture points, aimed at re-establish the free flow of qi to restore balance and trigger the body's natural healing response.

Acupuncture can be used to support all sorts of conditions considered chronic and acute, physical and emotional. For instance; headaches and migraine, digestive disorders, stress and anxiety, problems with sleep, menstrual and fertility problems, respiratory problems and dermatological conditions.

What happens in an acupuncture treatment?

Your first appointment will last around 1½ hours. This will be a diagnostic consultation where the acupuncturist will discuss your main concerns, together with your medical history and other relevant information. The session will also include a physical examination, where the practitioner will feel your pulse, look at your tongue and also feel some of the acupuncture points on your abdomen. The information from this consultation will enable the acupuncturist to make a detailed Chinese medical diagnosis, and to formulate a specific treatment plan for you. All procedures will be clearly explained to you at each session.

If you would like more information and to make an appointment please call or visit the Meridian Centre.
